Blackbeard
In 1718, Blackbeard paid a pardon to North Carolina Governor, Charles Eden, permitting him to set up a safe haven at Ocracoke Island. Beach bonfires, BBQ’s, drinking, dancing and general merriment were standard conduct. One such party lasted for days, attracting pirate captain notables-- Israel Hands, Charles Vane, Robert Deal and John Rackham.
