The “Red Flag Fleet” braced itself for chaos, but it never came, as Shih promptly asserted herself as sole commander. The lady pirate then assumed the name, Ching Shih, meaning “widow of Zheng Yi”. Once acquiring her new title, her reputation and operation only grew as the years passed.
