Far from the U.S. naval base and nestled between two barrier islands, Barataria Bay became a booming port for smugglers who relied on trade with the various Caribbean colonies. Frustrated with their role as mere dealers, the Lafitte brothers eventually ran four schooners from Barataria, pillaging Spanish ships to augment their revenue.
