Living conditions below the deck of a pirate ship were dismal at best. The dark birthing quarters reeked of rotten meat, foul bilge water and pirates who rarely bathed. The crew slept in cramped spaces, often in stacked, swinging hammocks. They shared these spaces with barrels of food, black powder, cannon shot, livestock and a wide assortment of creepy crawlies.
