Henry “Long Ben” Avery

After his discharge from the Navy in 1690, Avery entered the illegal slave trade, under the protection of the Bahamian and Bermudian governors. He was known to bait prospective slave traders on his ship by flying the English colors and then snatch them, chaining the rival dealers in the ship’s hold beside their former captives.
