Sailors and pirates in the 1700’s endured a shipboard menu that was not only monotonous, but also barely edible. Common fare was hardtack (ship’s biscuits), dried meat and wine or beer. Occasionally the men could augment their diet by catching fish or sea turtles. Poor diets caused many sailors to suffer from diseases, such as scurvy. By the mid-1700’s, fresh limes were brought aboard to prevent this deadly disease.
