During the battle, Mary Read shot her pistol below deck, shouting at the pirates to “Come up and fight like men.” Calico Jack’s ship was captured and nine pirates were sentenced to be hung. When given the opportunity to speak in the courtroom, both Anne and Mary said, “Milord, we plead our bellies.” Both women were pregnant.
