Before launching an attack, the Chinese offered Shih a deal. Wise enough to know her buccaneering days were numbered, Shih took the government’s amnesty offer, which allowed her to keep her pirate booty and bargain lenient treatment for her crew. Shih eventually enjoyed an early retirement in Canton, where she ran a gambling house.
