Jean Lafitte

 

 

When the U.S. sent a warship to remove Lafitte from the gulf, Jean offered no resistance and departed Galveston, loaded with booty. After several more scrapes with the U.S. Navy, Lafitte made for Columbia, where he received a privateer’s commission and a new ship. Off the coast of Honduras one night in 1823, Lafitte made a dire mistake, misjudging two Spanish warships for merchantman. Wounded in battle, Lafitte is said to have died a short time after.
