Preying upon ships in the waters of Jamaica, Cuba and Hispaniola, Bonney soon gained a reputation for toughness and pirate competence. As fate would have it, Calico Jack and his mistress Anne Bonney one day captured the privateer vessel that Mary Read was serving upon. Read joined the crew and became friends with Bonney.
