Destiny drew both women to the sea. Bonney married a disgraceful sailor and moved to the pirate haven of New Providence. Enlisting in the Army, Read fought courageously at the Battle of Flanders. She married a fellow soldier and the two were content as innkeepers. Yet when her husband died, Read again donned men’s clothes and joined the crew of a privateer vessel.
