Since pirates were basically defenseless during the work on shore, pirate leaders would often anchor in hidden bays and chose beach sites that were tactically to their advantage. Areas such as the shallow waters around the inlets of North Carolina’s coast were ideal because most ships could not negotiate the treacherous sand bars.
