Relatively unprotected by the English during this time, the island was the ideal layover for buccaneers making the "Pirate Round"-- the long journey from the Atlantic Ocean around the Cape of Good Hope to the Indian Ocean. With huge beaches, deep bays, abundant fresh water, local livestock and plentiful citrus trees, the place the ideal pirate supply depot.
