Did you know?
Pirates raised their Jolly Roger—the flag emblazoned with various emblems of death-- as a signal for their victims to surrender. The flag may have been named after the devil, Old Roger, or possibly from the French term for the flag, “Jolie Rouge.” While the Jolly Roger would strike fear in the heart of sailors, it was less dreaded than the plain red flag, signifying no mercy/death to all who saw it.
