Contrary to the myth of pirates swarming ships laden with gold and jewels, the most typical pirate plunder consisted of silk, cotton, tobacco, ship’s supplies and slaves. As food and provisions were always in short supply, pirates relied on stealing everyday necessities to survive. A ship surgeon’s chest of medicine was considered precious, as most pirates suffered from at least one ailment.
