Upon returning to home port, pirates divided the spoils of their raids. Booty was divided more or less equally, although the captain and other officers usually received more than the others. However, the crews were often entitled to steal the personal possessions of captured passengers and crew, evidenced by the gaudy silks and fine jewels that often characterized pirate dress.
